My name is Ian; founder , shaper, glasser and chief broom pusher of Honu Boards.
In 2006 while vacationing in kauai with my family I was watching the sea turtles catch waves and saw a local riding a standup board for the first time. Being a surfer now living in Michigan, It made perfect sense to give standup a try to feeod my need to be on the water so far from the ocean. I went to work learning all I could about board desings and shaping techniques and put my wood working abilities to the test to see what I could make. The result was the red cedar board shown below. Since that board was launched, more people have become interested in my work and Honu boards was created.
it may be a small shop producing on fine board at a time that looks as good on the wall as it does on the water, but it's a shop that puts all it's heart and soul into every board.
